Basic Septic Care

If you have a septic system there are some basic things you need to do and "not do" in order to keep it running in tip top shape.

Keep rainwater away from the drain or leachfield. If that leachfield is too wet it can't absorb the waste going into it.

Don't overload the tank. Make sure your plumbing isn't leaking (toilets, etc) and reduce water usage levels as much as possible.

Keep trees out of the way. The roots can cause problems if they grow into the tank.

Toilets should be kept free of unapproved debris. It's even more critical that kids not dump toys or litter or kleenex down the toilet. Only septic approved items should go down or you'll end up with an expensive repair job.

If you have a garbage disposal (we do) be sure everything that goes in is ground up nicely. Otherwise it could clog your septic tank since it adds a lot of volume.

Never put grease in the drain, because the grease clogs up in the leachfield.

Don't drive on it, don't build on it, basically just stay away from the septic system and the leachfield. Disturbing them can cause a breakage or prevent your ability to fix something when it does break.

Pay attention to it for regular maintenance. Clean it, check for trouble, don't just ignore it. Don't let your household habits slack or you'll have a serious septic issue on your hands.
